Avar is now requesting submissions for issue 6.1, to be published January 2027.

This special volume of AVAR focuses on interactions between (semi-) nomadic peoples and formalized hegemonic power(s), and intercultural and intersocietal engagement in borderland spaces in the second and first millennia BCE. This volume has a wide ranging geographical interest and will accept submissions concerning peoples in central Asia, the Near East, Northern Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Hegemonic power(s) and peoples participated in the negotiation of space, authority, and identity throughout in a variety of ways, with varying levels of success, in an attempt to define their place, their limits, and, ultimately, their sense of belonging. As such, we welcome proposals that approach questions of interaction from interdisciplinary perspectives and include a broad range of evidentiary types.

Avar accepts submissions in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Submissions may take the form of short notes (2,000-4,000 words) and articles (6,000-12,000 words). Word counts include notes and references.

Submissions will only be accepted through the submission platform (see link above).
