Avar is now requesting submissions for issue 5.1, to be published January 2026.

This special volume of Avar focuses on Ethnicity and Identity in the Ancient Near East. We seek submissions that investigate aspects of social identity, difference, or consciousness within the traditional fields of Ancient Near Eastern Studies (i.e. history and archaeology of ancient Western Asia and Egypt) and are especially interested in interdisciplinary approaches that incorporate socio-anthropological theory.

Topics may be broad, comparative, or specific, and some possibilities include: studies of cultural or ethnic markers, case studies of particular communities or groups, evidence of prejudice or racism, comparison of alterities, the formation or influence of ancestor myths, and many others.

Avar accepts submissions in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Submissions may take the form of short notes (2,000-4,000 words) and articles (6,000-12,000 words). Word counts include notes and references.

Submissions will only be accepted through the submission platform: https://avarjournal.com/avar/submissionprepchecklist
